While gratitude is one of my favorite spiritual practices, there can be a downside.
Last year, I got into some debt. However, I was determined not to let it get me down. I used my daily gratitude practice to pull myself out of my post debt blues. I told myself that I was grateful for my finances when I was secretly annoyed and upset over my situation. After all, wouldn’t it have been incredibly unspiritual for me to admit that I wasn’t particularly grateful for my circumstances at that time?
Actually, I was doing a disservice to myself because I was using gratitude to suppress feelings that needed to be acknowledged.
When you are faced with a difficult situation in your life and you are struggling to be grateful for it, take some time to acknowledge those feelings. When doing your gratitude practice, focus on those things that you’re genuinely grateful for. After you’ve dealt with the reasons why it is difficult to find gratitude for certain aspects of your life, see if you can find some small reason to be grateful for that particular situation.
By the way, I’m genuinely grateful for you, whether you are an occasional reader or faithful follower!
